Put Your Heart Into It: Valentine’s Day and Every Day
You’ve got options when it comes to your health. While cardiovascular disease still is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, you can be your own heart hero. The #1 recommendation is to stay active: the key to heart health is to keep moving and avoid being sedentary. Your heart, after all, is a muscle. While it’s always working, you can condition it to work better for longer by the way you approach your wellness.
Just this week, cardiologists at UCLA reminded us that “everyday decisions are important to cardiovascular health….Valentine’s Day is a good time to give yourself the gift of lifestyle changes that will benefit you through the year.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress that when it comes to heart health, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do. While some activity is better than no activity, the best from a heart and brain perspective works all muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).
Research has shown that doing a mix of aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities 3 to 5 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes help your heart and your mind. While exercise in general is known to reduce stress and improve mood, the combination of cardio (aerobic) work and muscle strengthening actually sharpens your thinking, learning and judgment skills.

Developed by fitness expert Sebastien Lagree, the Megaformer™ improves on the traditional pilates “reformer” with greater versatility for a wider range of movements. Why does that matter? Because you can target muscles not otherwise accessible in other exercise formats: through slow and controlled lengthening and contraction of muscles under continuous tension. The Megaformer™ enhances both safety and efficiency, reducing joint impact substantially while keeping your heart rate up and strengthening multiple muscle groups at once.
