Sculpt Studio’s Take on Megaformers, Lagree Method, Fitness & Health

What’s So “Mega” About A Megaformer Workout at Sculpt Studio?

Why is it called a Megaformer?  Is there really something extraordinary about the machine we’ve all come to love (…and hate….and love!)? And why can’t you just do similar exercises without the machine to get the same results? Two recent articles in the Wall Street Journal underscore the magic behind a Megaformer workout using the Lagree Fitness Method (July 21, 2015).   The first (“Meet the Megaformer”) explains that a Megaformer is not just a souped-up pilates reformer. “It’s a total gym,” says the machine’s inventor Sebastien Lagree, who goes on to point out resistance springs are the secret to training on the Megaformer. “The springs allow you to lengthen and shorten your muscles in a full range of motion without overstretching the joints.”   The second (“A Workout With the Benefits of Pilates — Plus Cardio and Music”) highlights a busy entrepreneur in search of an effective and efficient workout to fit her crushing schedule. She “‘wanted something that lengthened and strengthened [her] muscles, that was easy on [her] joints, but got [her] heart rate up and was set to music.’’   The Solution:  Lagree Fitness Method on the Megaformer. This is the workout we offer at Sculpt Studio in Bethesda, MD; delivering classes that address total fitness needs, while keeping the routines challenging for novice and seasoned pro, alike. In each exercise, the Lagree Method taught on Megaformers provides continuous tension to work multiple muscles simultaneously (you know — the ones you “didn’t know were there” until the day after your workout?).  It’s the combination of slow and controlled movements, with quick transitions from one exercise to the next, that makes the magic happen.   “We focus on time spent keeping muscles engaged continuously in each exercise, not on a set number of repetitions; then getting into the next move quickly. Rest and recovery are for the days or hours between your Megaformer workouts at Sculpt — not during!”   says Sculpt Studio Founder and Lead Instructor, Mary Farber. Done correctly, it is the most efficient workout available.   So what’s so Mega about the Megaformer workout at Sculpt Studio? Is it the machine or the method? Yes.* Add to that Sculpt Studio’s Lagree Fitness Certified Instructors, with a range of inspiring teaching styles and motivational tools, and you’ve got the whole package.   (*it’s both!) Need proof? Isabella’s Thoughts on 100 Sculpt Studio Megaformer Classes

100! 100! That sure sounds like an impressive number! It is an even more impressive number when it represents the number of classes you have taken at Sculpt Studio in Bethesda. A few weeks ago, I reached this milestone. As I look back at each of the classes I have taken, the instructors who have pushed me further than I thought my body could go, and my fellow participants who have been in the trenches with me, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. I walked into Sculpt in August 2014 not really knowing what I was getting myself into, but I was looking for something that would challenge me physically and get me back to the shape I like to be in. Sculpt has definitely delivered. I have pushed myself more and more in each class. I even challenged myself to come to Sculpt 6 days in a row. I can affirmatively say that I am hooked. I have a busy and demanding schedule as an attorney, but I look forward to my morning or evening workouts at Sculpt Studio. Those 50 minutes on the Megaformer are all mine, there are no email dings and my phone is not ringing. As Jill always says at the end of the class, we should congratulate ourselves on taking 50 minutes for ourselves, and she is so right. Those 50 minutes are the best jolt in the morning for a non-coffee or caffeinated beverage drinking person such as myself. After class, I feel like I can take on anything that the day will throw at me. Sculpt is more than just a workout studio, it is community, where we each understand what we are about to do and where we celebrate with each other at the end of an always grueling workout. I am very happy to be a part of that community and to see how we are all changing because of this magical megaformer. The instructors know your name and what you can and cannot do on the megaformer. The faces in class become familiar and conversation are stuck before and after class. At the end of the day, we all share a bond because we like sweating, being sore and always leave wanting more. As so many others who sweat it out and keep coming back for more at Sculpt, I feel better, healthier, and definitely look a lot better than when I started. Thus, Sculpt On! Regards,...

Megaformers, Results and Victoria’s Secret Models

If you have ever attended a Megaformer class at Sculpt Studio in Bethesda, you know how intense the workout is. It takes focus, determination, stamina and every ounce of strength you have to transition from move to move without taking a break for 50 minutes. The way your body feels (sore) and your mind clears at the end of class is good bio feedback on what you accomplished. The trick is to keep coming back and build up to two, three or four classes per week. Need some reassurance of the possible results of becoming a Megaformer maniac? As the buzz around Megaformers and the Lagree Method of training grows, more and more celebrities and models are coming out of the woodwork as devotees. Romee Strijd and Toni Garrn, both Victoria’s Secret models, credit Megaformer workouts for their amazingly toned bodies. Second Verse: Worse Than The First….You’re Not Alone

Recently overheard at Sculpt Studio: a conversation between two clients new to Megaformer workouts, as they realized between them that sure, the first workout was a breed apart; but that second visit…..It actually was harder than the first time! It seems like a cruel joke, but it’s very common among our clients to endure the world-rocking of the first time on the Megaformer, only to find that – contrary to reasonable expectation of progress or familiarity – the second class seems harder. If this has happened to you too, you’re not alone. Why? Any number of performance-impacting factors on any given day make us feel like RockyBalboa, fist-pumping at the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps*, or well, Rocky when (insert your favorite fictional boxing villain here: _______) has knocked the stuffing out of him. Why are some workouts an endorphin party while others make us feel as if a lead-balloon has more oomph than we do? (*Is that Rocky reference showing my age? That was total triumph! If you haven’t seen the Rocky® franchise, you owe it to yourself to see the original…). The first factor is the obvious: It’s physical. So, after an ab-kicking like few that have come before, your muscles may just not have recouped enough to thank you and ask for more. Yet. The second factor is subtle: It’s psychological. Who doesn’t expect the second go-round with a new thing to go a little more smoothly than the first? We’re more wise to the ways of What-the-hell-IS-a-Megaformer; and whether we fell off the machine that first time or not (truth: I totally did…) we expect a little more familiarity. We expect to feel even the slightest bit…accomplished? Hasn’t every coach or music or dance teacher told us that ‘practice makes perfect’? “I’ve already been here. I’ve got this” you may think. Then a few short minutes into that second workout, you realize: it’s the same Studio; same machine. But that’s where the parallels probably end. Every workout is different. That’s the beauty (when you’ve been doing this awhile) and the beast (when you haven’t yet). There is enormous variety in the routines, so it takes a while to hear the name of an exercise and connect it with the right body position or movement. It’s all “rub your tummy and pat your head at the same time” in the beginning. The other mental factor that can make the second class seem harder than the first is that now you know what’s coming from a global perspective (if not the actual moves or order of the exercises). It’s settled into your consciousness somewhere that the instructor is going to challenge you every single one of those 50 minutes. It’s going to make your muscles shake with exertion. You’re expected to fail (from a muscle endurance perspective) – and expected to keep going until you do. There are no formal “breaks” in this relentless session. The transitions are fast from one exercise to the next, but the movement is s-l-o-w. That’s all part of the design. So don’t be discouraged if you come away from the second session feeling not quite so stoked as you did after surviving the first. It’s a process. Some days are Rocky® !!! and some days are just plain...

Sculpt Studio Voted One of the Top Pilates Studios in Best of Bethesda

We opened our Megaformer studio in Bethesda and hoped to build a community of clients dedicated to fitness, a healthy lifestyle and of course Lagree Method workouts. You are an amazing group of people. I admire your tenacity and dedication. The more insane moves and routines that we challenge you with, the more you dig deep to finish and ask for more. Back in August, we asked you to vote for Sculpt Studio as the best Pilates studio in Bethesda. We’re not exactly a Pilates studio…but it was the closest fitness category to vote in. We were a brand new business, open seven months, so we were hopeful but unsure of what our results would be. YOU ROCKED THE VOTE! Sculpt Studio was a top vote getter in Best of Bethesda 2105! The reason we made that prestigious list was you, our clients. Thank you for voting for us and for the passion you feel about our studio, instructors and classes.
